What is MECC?
Making Every Contact Count
Making Every Contact Count (MECC) is an approach to behaviour change that utilises the millions of day-to-day interactions that organisations and people have with other people to encourage changes to their lifestyle and wellbeing.
MECC Design & Behavioural Science
Our approach integrates rigorous behavioural science with Making Every Contact Count (MECC), an evidence-based method that empowers frontline staff to turn daily interactions into brief, supportive wellbeing conversations. Our lead, Deryn, brings extensive expertise as a co-author of the original West Midlands e-learning tool and a key developer of the MECC Behaviour Change Development Framework. Having trained hundreds of professionals across the UK and authored numerous sector-wide resources, she ensures our methods are both practical and high-impact for public health teams and the diverse communities they serve.
1. Mapping Current Contacts
We identify every touchpoint where staff engage with the public, ensuring no opportunity for a healthy conversation is missed.
2. Identifying Barriers
Using COM-B and TDF frameworks, we pinpoint the psychological and environmental barriers that prevent effective MECC delivery.
3. Co-designing Tools
We co-create scripts, prompts, and job aids with frontline staff, ensuring they are practical, authentic, and easy to use.
4. Testing & Iteration
We test approaches in pilot settings, using rapid feedback loops to refine the messaging before wider system roll-out.
Empowering Your Frontline with MECC Skills
Interactive Workshops & Bite-Sized Sessions: From half-day foundations to 90-minute boosters, we provide flexible training that fits around busy frontline schedules without compromising impact.
Skills Coaching & Support: We go beyond theory with safe-practice coaching, helping staff rehearse difficult conversations and build the confidence needed to provide effective brief interventions.
Embedding into Supervision: We train managers and supervisors to support MECC delivery through regular feedback loops, ensuring behavioural focus remains a core part of professional development.
Behavioural Competency: Staff graduate with the ability to recognise lifestyle risks, use motivational language effectively, and signpost patients seamlessly to appropriate local services.
MECC Delivery Auditing & System Review
Closing the loop on implementation is vital. We review MECC delivery across system footprints to identify successes, address drift, and ensure high-quality behavioural interventions are standard practice.
Audit Tools
We design bespoke audit tools and data review frameworks that capture the quality and frequency of MECC interactions without increasing administrative burden.
Sustaining Practice
Our reviews look beyond training numbers to assess how MECC is embedded into supervision, annual appraisals, and professional development loops.
Feedback Loops
We establish observation models and rapid feedback loops that allow frontline staff and system leads to iterate scripts and support structures in real-time.
Meaningful Conversations
Empower staff to turn brief interactions into high-quality health conversations using behavioral science frameworks.
Improved Outcomes
Drive measurable improvements in system-wide wellbeing outcomes through consistent, evidence-led delivery.
Benefits of Our MECC Approach
Greater Reach & Equity
Improve health equity by enabling more effective interventions within underserved and hard-to-reach groups.
Optimised Contacts
Make better use of existing touchpoints across the system without adding significant burden to frontline staff.
